Made by Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra from over 50-year-old, low-yielding bush vines planted on mountain slopes in the heart of the Calatayud region of northern Spain.
At the turn of the millenium the Spanish family Ortega Gil-Fournier founded a small 'boutique' winery at the foot of the Andes, in La Consulta, in the Argentinean province of Mendoza. The company is changing - Bodega y Vinedos O Fournier aims to build a winery equipped with the latest technology. It will have a capacity of 600,000 litres in stainless steel, oak and cement vats, ranging from 6,500 to 25,000 litres in capacity. An impressive change.
Made from 100% Airen by the Bodega San Isidro near Toledo. Unusually the fermentation of this organic sparkler is limited during the secondary fermentation by cutting down the amount of yeast available to the natural sugars and the effect of this is to retain a low alcohol level and a soft, full flavoured palate.
Made in Sherry country in southern Spain by the old established Sherry firm of Barbadillo. Modern european red grape varieties ripen fully and are carefully made into this juicy , lively red.

'Cruz de Piedra' ('stone crosses' marking the Pilgrims' Road to St. Juan de Compostela). The vineyards high in the Calatayud mountains, southeast of Rioja they enjoy heat well into autumn, delivering grapes with super ripe flavours. Yields are low but so are overheads at the modern Virgen de Sierra co-op winery in Villaroya, making this dry white a bargain.
Valdepeñas is situated in the south of the Castilla-La Mancha region, south-east of Madrid. Valdepeñas, meaning 'Valley of the Stones', is one of Spain's oldest wine-producing regions. The region is centred around the city named after it, Valdepeñas, and it is irrigated by the Río Jabalón, a tributary of the Río Guadiana. Its wines, which have a long tradition, are produced from more info >>
Cariñena is the largest of the four DO zones in the Aragón region. Traditionally most of the hefty reds were sold in bulk for blending but like many regions they are now looking to break with the past. Progressive private bodegas are now becoming far more common. Classic Tempranillo notes of dark cherry and blackcurrant are lifted by a hint of dried flowers and spice. Superbly balanced, the fruits more info >>
The 60-100 year-old untrained bushvines at 'Cruz de Piedra' ('stone crosses' marking the Pilgrims' Road to St. Juan de Compostela) are bursting with health. Yields are low but so are overheads at the modern Virgen de Sierra co-op winery in Villaroya, making this fresh rosado a bargain.
With its Bodega looking like a French Château, surrounded by 60 hectares of vines and positioned between the arms of the Ebro and Najerilla rivers, this is an idylic site. This is a family property headed by Inigo and Javier Amezola who rebuilt their grandfather's winery, which disapeared due to phylloxera, exactly where it had been 150 years previously. This re-invention has allowed the family more info >>

Emilio Lustau S.A. was founded in 1896 by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo. In 1940, his son-in-law Don Emilio Lustau Ortega moved the bodega to the Santiago district, in the old quarter of Jerez, in buildings which formed a part of the ancient Moorish city wall. The Lustau Solera Reserva range was created from the original Lustau stocks from its beginnings as an "almacenista". These stocks were joined by more info >>
Montilla-Moriles is an area of Andalucian wine production that has, in recent years, fallen under the shadow of its larger neighbour, Jerez. It grows the same grapes, uses the 'flor' yeast and cask ageing in a Solera system to make similar wines, the fundamental difference being that Montilla are never fortified and only achieve natural alcohol levels. It has been 275 years since Don Diego more info >>
