Caol Ila (pronounced 'cull-eela'), is considered to be one of the lighter of the Islays. Medium-bodied with a rounded flavour. Pale in colour with a greenish tinge. This malt has a peaty nose, with distinct floral notes. It is described as tasting slighty of seaweed/iodine, lightly medicinal, smoky, salty, sweet with a dry peppery finish.
Extra ageing has calmed the impact of the phenols, with the peat arriving on the palate late, and tempered by smooth oak. A very mellow, mature Islay malt. Tasting Notes from The Distiller's Colour. Pale Straw. Taste. The taste starts a little sweeter than the 12-year-old. Very pleasant, light-flavoured smokiness. A complex balance of primary tastes. Finish. Sweet-smokey, lingering finish.
The ultimate gift for any Whisky lover contains three malt whiskies from distilleries around the coast line of Scotland. Talisker is one of the world greats and is a full bodied, expressive malt that is packed with spice and a smokey finish. Caol Ila has the distinct Islay salty tang with an oily smokeiness. Clynelish with its delicate smoke and sweetness, makes this an attractive dram.
Type: Vatted Malt (a blend of single malts from different distilleries) Tasting Notes: The aroma is a highly aromatic combination of fruit, spice and marine peatiness in the form of a beach bonfire. Adding water brings out aromas that remind you of burning ropes and a touch of iodine. In the mouth it is very full on the palate, rich and loaded with flavour: a bacon-fat smokiness, full-blown peat, more info >>
