Heading up the D2 from Bordeaux, just short of the village of Pauillac, two imposing Châteaux straddle the road like a gateway to a land of fine wine. Pichon Comtesse de Lalande stands to your right, and on the left is Pichon Baron. The estate was bought by insurance giant, AXA, who refurbished and turned its fortunes around. One of two Châteaux owned by Jean-Marie Garde (the other is Clos Rene, also in Pomerol) this 12.4 acre property is planted with principally Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon . Traditional fermentation is the order of the day here with 25% of the crop going into new barrels in each vintage. Wines are bottled fined but not filtered which preserves all of the substantial plummy Pomerol flavours.
