Etienne Barret lives in Chateau Curson set amid the Domaine Pochon. All namers are interchangeable and may well be familiar to regular adnams drinkers. However he makes just one style of dry white Crozes and is one of the very best examples that we know of .

Generations of Pochons have occupied the cobblestone-built medieval Château de Curson, but have only made their own wines, by eco-friendly methods, since 1988. Aged in large barrels, this supple, savoury wine has ripe redcurrant fruit and hints of liquorice, pepper and spice. Great with roast ham.

2004 Cornas 'Patou' Domaine Dumien-Serrette
This diminutive property of 1.8 hectares is planted with 100% Syrah and farmed along the principles of lutte raisonnée. The domaine has been in the family for four generations and the majority of methods Gilbert Serrette employs very much follow the family tradition - crushing is still carried out manually by foot, as is pigeage and they still use a manually operated, vertical press, with élevage being carried out in old wooden vats.

Jean Thévenet was waiting at the cellar door for us, and a grey day in mid November suddenly became brighter and with meaning. His cellar, on the other hand, is neither bright nor, to the casual eye, meaningful. Jean-Paul Versino, who operates from his home on the south side of Châteauneuf, is emerging as a star of the region. His use of oak is idiosyncratic: he employs beermaking vats from Alsace, so well-used that there are scarcely any woody flavours left. This, however, his Grenache-rich top cuvée, was aged in small barrels for 2 years. A modern, powerful yet elegant expression of Châteauneuf: deep garnet in colour, with complex aromas of ripe berry fruits, damsons and herbs.
