Team up this deeply-flavoured, white pepper-edged Beaujolais with roasted game birds or charcuterie and you're onto a winner. The richness and generosity of fruit -strawberries, raspberries -typifies wines from this family-run domaine, presided over by patriarch René Berrod. Not one to skimp on breakfast (or any other meal) this large, affable charatcer is as cheerful as any man whose children have all happily followed him into the family business.
Ripe and pungent, with generous strawberry fruit and hints of incense, this is Fleurie (one of the 10 'cru' villages of Beaujolais, to the north of the region) of rare concentration. It'd go down a treat with something like roast quail. Rene Berrod, a man of girth, as characterful and generous as his wines, usefully reared two winemaking sons, and marketing-inclined siblings besides. Thus ensuring the smooth running of his historic estate, based in ancient stone cellars.
Food-friendly, summer fruit-scented Beaujolais in usefully portable half bottle format. An essential fixture for every picnic hamper. 'Les Roches de Vivier' is the top cuvée from the Berrod family's ancient stone cellar. They specialise in fragrant styles from Beaujolais 'cru' village Fleurie, one of ten villages on granite hills to the north of the region recognised as producing more info >>

An intense, fruity Mâcon from the fabulous Cordier estate. Crisp citrus fruit flavours combine with the richer, more rounded hazelnut and butter characteristics that are the hallmarks of this style.
Beatrice and Jean Claude Bouche, owners of this domaine, are impassioned wine-makers. Together they manage their vineyards using organic farming methods, creating wines of great character. Just to the east of Orange the Domaine du Vieux Chene vineyards spread out on a slightly sloped and very rocky plateau. This location offers the wines the benefit of a beneficial microclimate thanks to an especially high yearly level of sunshine.

All the appeal of the warm south, and the ripe raspberry character you look forward to in good Grenache. A useful quaffer for any time of the year.
The Perrin brothers of great Châteauneuf domaine Beaucastel are behind this elegant southern Rhône blend, a wine of warmth and delicious fruit purity. Grenache lends rich raspberry flavour, Syrah spicy depth. Great with roasts and grills. Marc and Pierre Perrin's progressive commitment to organic cultivation echoes the spirit of Edwardian scientist forebear Pierre Perrin, who introduced flash pasteurisation (super-heating grapes pre-ferment) to increase flavour.

Just to the northeast of the spectacular town of Minervois is the 30 hectare domaine of Jean-Christophe Piccinini. The Piccininis are an ancient family of Minervois vignerons going back many generations but Jean-Christophe only set up this domaine in the early 90's. He makes a full range of local wines but this organic red, made from 20-year-old Syrah vines grown on the testing stony clay soils, caught our eye because it combines abundant fruit matched to a solid backbone.
The well-connected Mignard family (Pierre Mignard was artist to the court of Louis XIV) bought Domaine Fontarèche in 1682, and it has been handed down the generations.Once owned by the Archbishops of Narbonne, this distinctive terroir of clay and limestone terraces is located in the Aude region, west of Narbonne, and is now run along ecologically sound lines ('la lutte raisonée'). vines more info >>
Owned by the proprietors of Chateau Chassagne Montrachet in Burgundy this is a Chateauneuf made in the traditional method but with an eye to early drinking.

A good way to get your hands on a top wine estate is to marry the owners daughter ! This is just what Gerard Boudot did many years ago but it has proved better for the domaine in this case as his particular dedication to quality and attention to detail soon elevated Domaine Sauzet to the top flight of Burgundy producers. His wines are characterised by fine purity of fruit flavours and subtance balanced by elegant oak length. All his wines deserve bottle ageing to show their true potential.

A red wine from the Lorgeril family of Cabardès, grown in vineyards of neighbouring Minervois. Minervois has been described as a 'south-facing amphitheatre', making for a natural sun trap, soaking up the warmth of the Mediterranean.
The Clos de Caveau estate lies amid woodland below the shattered peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail because it was isolated and thus perfect for organic cultivation. 40 year-old vines and severe sorting keep yields very low indeed.
