Thoughtful Etienne Pochon is our touchstone for quality in the large northern Rhône appellation of Crozes-Hermitage, which surrounds Hermitage proper and yields lighter Syrah styles. Generations of Pochons have occupied the cobblestone-built medieval Château de Curson, but have only made their own wines, by eco-friendly methods, since 1988. Aged in large barrels, this supple, savoury wine has ripe redcurrant fruit and hints of liquorice, pepper and spice. Great with roast ham.

Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur was inspired by the French tradition in which sweet and fresh elixirs were fortified by fine eaux de vie and cognac. Named for the ginger estate of Domaine de Canton, this armoatic elixir first became popular with the French during colonial Indochine. Inspired by the subtle spiciness of the baby ginger grown there, the French began adding its exotic flavour to eau more info >>
A small family enterprise, with equally diminutive cellars. The quality of their wines, however, is up there with the best, and their very junior Pinot brings all the juicy, soft red-fruits of the Cote de Nuits at an affordable price. Don't stand on ceremony with grand appellations - this is every bit as good as a lesser Gevrey, at a fract-ion of the price

At the mouth of the Loire river, the Pays Nantais is soothed by an ocean climate and sheltered from major variations. The soil, which consists of shales, gneiss and sedimentary rocks, is particularly suitable for wine growing. Vines have existed in this region since Roman times, but it was not until the end of the 17th century that this region's most famous wine, Muscadet, came into existence. more info >>
