Brouilly is the southernmost and largest of the Beaujolais crus and as such is often described as "typical" in regards to Beaujolais. Gamay is always hand harvested, as fermentation of uncrushed grapes begins within the grapes in the absence of oxygen. Domaine des Nuges, founded in 1976, conducts this fermentation in open top vats, resulting in semi carbonic maceration as oxygen slowly gets introduced. Very bright and vibrantly coloured. Aromas of red berries, red fruit and spice leap from the glass. The intense colour is not matched more info >> by the tannins, which are light and soft, with an almost sweet finish. The Coteaux du Layon: small, steeply-sloped valleys bordered by the Loire, and slightly less majestic River Layon. Chenin Blanc grapes are used here to produce styles from subtly off-dry to overtly sweet ('noble rot' shrivels grapes to raisiny succulence). Domaine des Forges is in Chaume, famed for luscious 'moelleux' styles. This delicious wine, a fine balance of nectar-like sweetness and fresh, peachy acidity, is recommended drinking with foie gras.

Ripe blackberry tinged with ginger and mace gets a 2006 Volnay Clos des Chenes off to a satisfying start, but there is not the refinement of tannin to accompany the fruit and spice here that accrues to the best wines in this year's Bouchard collection.
