The Coteaux du Layon: small, steeply-sloped valleys bordered by the Loire, and slightly less majestic River Layon. Chenin Blanc grapes are used here to produce styles from subtly off-dry to overtly sweet ('noble rot' shrivels grapes to raisiny succulence). Domaine des Forges is in Chaume, famed for luscious 'moelleux' styles. This delicious wine, a fine balance of nectar-like sweetness and fresh, peachy acidity, is recommended drinking with foie gras.

Brouilly is the southernmost and largest of the Beaujolais crus and as such is often described as "typical" in regards to Beaujolais. Domaine des Maison Neuves are a quality-conscious grower that eschews the use of herbicides to give healthier vines. A deep coloured wine, showing great finesse and fruit intensity. The nose gives powerful aromas of ripe berry and currant notes. The palate shows soft tannins and a balanced acidity on the finish. Enjoy with white meat dishes.

Of all the great Beaujolais villages Fleurie deliveres a particular lively and fruity style of wine that has depth and charm. The Domaine des Deux Lys makes a delightfully friendly version that epitomises the appellation for us.

Mas des Montagnes is literally a 'mountain estate', comprising a group of higher-altitude Roussillon vineyards acquired by the Lorgeril family of Château de Pennautier, in the neighbouring Languedoc. Patrick Léon, formerly of Domaines Rothschild, is consultant winemaker. A notably mineral-tinged wine, reminiscent of its origins on stony schist hillsides, and possessing great texture and more info >>
One of the vinous delights of the Loire Valley. Like a grand Vouvray, this has quince, limes and honeyed tones - beautiful intensity of ripe Chenin Blanc.
A mélange of rich dark fruit from the twin pillars of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon and spicy oak. Great length of flavour, true class.
Domaine des Terres Gentilles has been owned and run by the same family since 1921. Now totalling 50 hectares of vines, the domaine makes a range of good value Burgundies, under winemaker Mikaël Marillier, son of the previous owners, Jean-Pierre and Martine Marillier. A very clean and fruity white, with delicate aromas of white flowers and citrus fruits. Lightly textured on the palate, with more crisp more info >>
Olivier Giroux, son of a Pouilly Fuisse domaine, set up his own domaine in the nearby village of Loche when his father showed no sign of moving on. This has been to our benefit as from the site he found he has consistently produced Chardonnays of exceptional concentration with clear mineral character.
Limited stock. Fresh subtle grassy Sauvignon nose. Good bright acidity and minerality. Lemon sherbet palate and a touch of green apple on the finish.
Based in the heart of the village of Verdigny, the family owned Domaine du Colombier had its origins in the 12th Century. Offering ripe rhubarb and gooseberry fruit and a zesty mineral texture. Aged on fine lees for up to a year for increased complexity.
At his estate in Mercurol, Philippe Desmure and daughter Emilie preserve essence of Syrah with minimum intervention methods. With its supple red fruit and roasted ham aroma, wonderfully perfumed quality of top quality Syrah. Dark, lively black fruit flavours with an appetising plum skin edge.
Gamay is always hand harvested, as fermentation of uncrushed grapes begins within the grapes in the absence of oxygen. Domaine des Nuges, founded in 1976, conducts this fermentation in open top vats, resulting in semi carbonic maceration as oxygen slowly gets introduced. Very bright and vibrantly coloured. Aromas of red berries, red fruit and spice leap from the glass. The intense colour is not matched more info >>
A gem of a find, this great quality white shows that there are still producers in Burgundy who offer superb value, even with small-volume production. This impressive wine comes from a family-owned domaine of only 50ha. Nicely balanced, with crisp citrus fruit providing the backbone, and softer notes of green apples and aromas of white flowers adding welcoming delicacy and complexity. Ideal with poultry or grilled white fish.
Ripe blackberry tinged with ginger and mace gets a 2006 Volnay Clos des Chenes off to a satisfying start, but there is not the refinement of tannin to accompany the fruit and spice here that accrues to the best wines in this year's Bouchard collection. I would relish the wine's virtues over the next 3-4 years and serve in contexts where a bit of rusticity presents no problem. 88 points. David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate.
Owned today by Jean-Claude Mas, this well established domaine has 25 hectares of vines in the Terrasses du Larzac area. Here in the foothills of the Montagne Noir, the soils are of limestone, clay and large pebbles, and are reminiscent of those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. An intense shade of purplish red with ruby hints. The nose offers notes of mocha and liquorice amidst the dark berry fruits. The palate more info >>

From a privately owned estate in the southern Rhône Valley comes this beautiful Gigondas wine with great concentration and balance. An elegant nose of black fruit is followed by a remarkable palate of blackcurrant, thyme, liquorice and tobacco characters. Warming peppery spice on the finish makes this perfect with casseroles.
Crozes-Hermitage, on a fertile plain encircling the stony hill of Hermitage, offers less heroic styles for sooner drinking. There is much to admire in these elegant northern Rhône Syrahs: spicy smokiness evoking bacon, black olives and thyme. At his estate in Mercurol, Philippe Desmure and daughter Emilie preserve essence of Crozes with minimum intervention methods. With its supple red fruit and roasted ham aroma, this is perfect with slow-cooked pork.
Collovray & Terrier’. Not, as you’d expect, a Jermyn Street shirt shop, but a collaboration between two hard-working families in southern Burgundy’s Mâconnais. Their ‘Domaine des Deux Roches’ comprises prime Chardonnay vineyards strung out between the rocky outcrops of Vergisson and Solutré. For their ‘Personnets’ wines, they act as negoçiants, buying grapes from trusted friends in possession of venerable vines yielding concentrated fruit.
Bernard Fouquet is one of the top growers in Vouvray (home to opulent Chenin Blanc) and organically-inclined. Vineyard inputs are applied with pinpoint accuracy, and grasses are grown between vine rows to encourage natural predators. From 'Le Marigny', one of Bernard's vine-clad lawns, planted on limestone, this is a relatively dry, barrel-fermented style, generous, yet crisp, with flavours of ripe apples and herbs. One for poached river fish.
