Made by Henri and Daniel Brunier of historic Châteauneuf property Vieux-Télégraphe (a classic cobblestone-strewn estate on the heat-steeped Hill of Crau)
The Brunier family (father Henri and sons Daniel & Frederick) run the boulder-strewn estate of Vieux Telegraphe and make one of the very best Grenache-driven wines of the region. The estate gets its name from being the site where the first optical telegraph system was invented.
A close neighbour of Vieux Telegraphe, the family firm of Font Michelle makes red Chateauneuf of substance principally made from their treasured vineyards of Grenache vines of more than 50 years old. Vines a little younger than this are used for thei excellent Cotes du Rhone.
In 2002, Henri and Daniel Brunier of historic Châteauneuf property Vieux-Télégraphe (a classic cobblestone-strewn estate on the heat-steeped Hill of Crau) thought they'd try bottling their mature-vine Grenache on its own. They were so taken by the result that they've repeated the exercise in subsequent vintages. This cheerily expresses the warm generosity of well-made Grenache: juicy, silky flavours of raspberries, sloes and damsons with hints of aromatic herbs.
The Steinmaier family bought the 13 hectares of this domaine in 1965. They added a further 10 hectare and some farm buildings in 1973. The soils are principaly limestone which suits the growing of red grapes. Concentration is the hallmark of this domaine.
From the outstanding 2000 vintage and scoring 91/100 Parker points "The elegant 2000 Vieux Telegraphe La Crau possesses 14.8% alcohol along with a deep ruby/purple color charming rich fruitiness and firm tannin in the finish. With loads of freshness copious quantities of pepper seaweed and black fruit characteristics and a distinctive minerality this full-bodied sweet 2000 requires 2-3 more info >>
Domaine Durieu is a family-owned domaine established in 1976, and winemaking is now overseen by Vincent Durieu. Their Côtes du Rhône vineyards are located on the Plan de Dieu, a plateau of light, stony soils bordering the slopes of Rasteau and Cairanne. Dark purplish red, with a classic Rhône nose of red and black berries, enhanced with a touch of wild herbs and spice. Has plenty of body, but is more info >>
In the mid-1990s, Philippe du Roy of Châteauneuf's famed Domaine de Villeneuve joined forces with consultant Philippe Cambie, seeking to produce 'authentic' (rather than flashy, souped-up and overblown) southern Rhône wines that owed their character to natural processes. Minimal intervention is the mantra here. Their blend of perfumed white Rhône grapes is ample and silky-textured, with aromas of pears, citrus and pineapple. Perfect with chicken caesar salad.
In their own words: "Spring was cooler than usual, and this feeling of coolness was heightened by plentiful days of rain and a Mistral that blew fairly regularly and would continue to do so until the end of the cycle – giving us precious help, but also destroying much in its path. Until June 15th, we had a mixture of showers, fine days and windy periods of rare violence. Then came a period more info >>

The Clos de Caveau estate lies amid woodland below the shattered peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail because it was isolated and thus perfect for organic cultivation. 40 year-old vines and severe sorting keep yields very low indeed.

Scoring 87-8/100 Parker points and from the outstanding 1998 vintage "The 1998 Cotes du Rhone La Sierra du Sud (100% Syrah) is vinified completely in wood cuves and then moved to old wood barrels. Olivier Giroux, son of a Pouilly Fuisse domaine, set up his own domaine in the nearby village of Loche when his father showed no sign of moving on. This has been to our benefit as from the site he found he has consistently produced Chardonnays of exceptional concentration with clear mineral character.
As the Château's archives show, the Domaine de Panéry, near Pouzilhac in the Gard region dates back to 1670. A diverse and polycultural estate from the outset, predominantly given over to wheat and sunflowers, it has been a commercial wine concern since the mid-19th century, now also offering truffles, tourism and horse-breeding and training facilities. Their sturdy, traditionally made Rhône more info >>
In the mid-1990s, Philippe du Roy of Châteauneuf's famed Domaine de Villeneuve joined forces with consultant Philippe Cambie, seeking to produce 'authentic' (rather than flashy, souped-up and overblown) southern Rhône wines that owed their character to natural processes involving earth, vines, fruit, harvesting and winemaking. Minimal intervention is the mantra here. This wine is unfiltered and all the better for it. A wild and feral whirl of rustic red fruit flavours.
Plan de Dieu is a small appellation in the centre of the southern Rhône, between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, originally cultivated in the middle ages. Domaine Durieu was created in 1976, owning vineyards established in the early 1900's, and more recent plantings. The wine's 70% Grenache provides a backbone of warm, bright red, jammy fruit, while the addition of other traditional varieties more info >>
