Easygoing yet satisfyingly complex, this lovely wine, with its aromas of raspberries and cherry-stone elegance, is at its best with roast duck or soft cheeses. Based in Lantignie near the 'cru' village of Regnié, the Joubert family operate from a charming chalet-like wooden winery. It sits in a mini-crevasse formed by the village's towering church walls and a precipitous slope of vines. This wine hails from Juliénas, one of 6 'crus' in which the Jouberts own vineyards.

Suffolk ham goes down a treat with this rare white Burgundy, an intriguing mix of ripe, smoky opulence and abundant crisp, appley fruit. It's made from the rare Aligoté grape, found in the obscure village of Bouzeron in southern Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise. Aubert de Villaine, co-proprietor of celebrated Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, has his hideaway there. He potters around his walled garden and quietly helps to elevate the area's reputation with superb wines like this.
You'll be bowled over by the enticing aromas, juicy red fruit flavours and silky tannins of this stylish Pinot. Dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles and game would suit it to a 'T'. A family-owned property in Morey-St-Denis, Domaine Robert Gibourg practices lutte raisonée, with a hands-on approach to both cultivation and harvesting. This amazing value Pinot Noir is made with great care, with hand picking and sorting of the grapes, and full de-stemming before fermentation. The result is a Pinot of impressive purity.
This diminutive property of 1.8 hectares is planted with 100% Syrah and farmed along the principles of lutte raisonnée. The domaine has been in the family for four generations and the majority of methods Gilbert Serrette employs very much follow the family tradition - crushing is still carried out manually by foot, as is pigeage and they still use a manually operated, vertical press, with élevage being carried out in old wooden vats.

We tasted our favourite southern Burgundy from Jean Thévenet's modest domaine in Mâcon-Clessé at the onset of its fermentation in Autumn 2006, and it is probably still bubbling gently as I write, such is the unhurried manner of his winemaking. A gem of a find, this great quality white shows that there are still producers in Burgundy who offer superb value, even with small-volume production. This impressive wine comes from a family-owned domaine of only 50ha. Nicely balanced, with crisp citrus fruit providing the backbone, and softer notes of green apples and aromas of white flowers adding welcoming delicacy and complexity. Ideal with poultry or grilled white fish.
