The clue's in the name: Barefoot Wine Company. Cathy Marshall set up her 'garage' winemaking outfit (i.e. cellars on a rental basis; bijou output) in 1997 with a view to vinifying prized parcels of fruit wherever she found them, hence BWC's nomadic progress from Franschhoek to Swartland to Paarl. Her iconoclastic range formerly focused solely on reds; this welcome Sauvignon addition has elegant, vibrant flavours of gooseberries, fresh cut grass, asparagus and lime peel.

Franschhoek is a co-operative with whom we have been dealing with for many years. Their wines have always been well crafted, easy drinkers. Recently they've been honing their skills in smaller, experimental wines and the semillon is a wonderful example of their work. Only 500 litres of semillon from 35-year-old vines were fermented and then matured in oak. The result is a wine bursting with pineapples and peaches with a zesty lime finish and luscious, silky textures.
