Grange Rouge's unique volcanic soils were formed one million years ago off the Med coast (near what's now Agde), when a geyser spurted ash and lava 1km into the air. The Phoenicians and Romans made wine here; Pierre Bésinet (whose ancestors arrived in 1790) now cultivates 14 varieties using 'green' methods. Bouillabaisse wine.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1951, Grange has grown into a true icon of Australian winemaking. The 2005 vintage offered warm, dry harvest conditions, boosting this wine's trademark intensity. 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon were fermented in new American oak hogsheads for 18 months. Huge weight and power, with a complex palate of chocolatey dark fruit and notes of rhubarb and fennel. Will age gracefully for over 20 years.
