Pale gold colour. Delicate floral fragrances on a mineral note. Well balanced, crisp, refreshing. Good minerality. Serve with charcuteries, fish and all sorts of mild cheeses. Soil: Clay and limestone. Site: In the South of Burgundy, in the Maconnais, in an area located between the communes of Macon, Lugny and Tournus.
A blend of Chardonnay from the villages of Uchizy and the eponymous Chardonnay. Organic estate in the heart of rural Mâcon, owned, run, and wine made, by Dominique Lafon, owner of top Meursault estate, Comte Lafon. Wholly organic production, and all the wines go through oak of varying sizes, provenance and age. Lovely, fine, minerally and grapefruit tones. Drink 2010-2011.
2008 produced 30% less in terms of quantity, but the knock-on effect of this has been a greater concentration of aromas, underscored by excellent natural acidity. All will benefit from 18 months bottle age, the Clos du Fours a little longer. These are all exciting and delicious wines – of great individuality and authenticity!
Domaine de la Bongran is one of Adnams most favoured estates. Why? Because year after year the Thevenet family produce stunning wines - totally unique in style and incredibly generous in flavour. Each wine takes months, if not years, to fully ferment. The grapes are late-picked, and the winery philosophy is totally unhurried. The wine is ready when it wants to be - not when the winmakers dictate. Truley fantastic stuff.

White Burgundy in a league of its own. Rich and golden, with honeyed depths and racy minerality; a wine for buttery scallops or fish carpaccio. Mâconnais vigneron extraordinaire Jean Thévenet makes awesomely intense Chardonnays using methods others shun as commercially suicidal. Risking calamitous weather, his grapes are picked over-ripe, often yielding wines of surpassing richness. Fermentation more info >>
We tasted our favourite southern Burgundy from Jean Thévenet's modest domaine in Mâcon-Clessé at the onset of its fermentation in Autumn 2006, and it is probably still bubbling gently as I write, such is the unhurried manner of his winemaking. A popular, white Burgundy of quality. Opulent, rich, with a flowery bouquet and lovely honey, apple and nutty flavours on the palate.
Until 2005, the Perraud family sold their grapes to the local co-operative but as the son of the family, Jean-Christophe, encouraged by his parents, has taken a keener interest, they have moved to making their own wine from their sixty acres of vines in Mâcon and St Veran. A mighty step for the then 24 year old, but quite obviously, the right move. His wines show a remarkable elegance and purity more info >>
Jean Thévenet was waiting at the cellar door for us, and a grey day in mid November suddenly became brighter and with meaning. His cellar, on the other hand, is neither bright nor, to the casual eye, meaningful. In fact, the cellar isn't a cellar, and as far as I have ever been able to make out is a barn-like edifice with a warren of ill-lit rooms, and all without any apparent order.
