Henri and Daniel Brunier of historic Châteauneuf property Vieux-Télégraphe (a classic cobblestone-strewn estate on the heat-steeped Hill of Crau) bought a farm from a pair of old men (who continued to live on there as part of the arangement) high in the hills behind Gigondas. Although much work on reviving the vineyards was needed they knew what they were doing for this is seriously good wine. The 2004 cheerily expresses the warm generosity of well-made Grenache.

When we tasted at this most highly-regarded Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate in Bédarrides this summer, we realised just how dynamic the brothers Brunier are. No sitting back and expecting their 'other' wines to bask in VT's reflected glory. Daniel and Frédéric Brunier continue to hone and polish even their most junior Vin de Pays, and have now decided to split the production of their Gigondas Les Pallières into two different cuvées - finding the terrain so completely different within this vineyard, that it supported two entirely different styles of wine. We chose Les Pallières over the Terrasse du Diable for its greater definition and freshness. Unlike many Châteauneuf estates, the brothers choose to declassify their young vine production as a separate entity in order to maximise the quality of their main wine. Contrarily, there are some big-name estates who cream-off and sell their top cuvées as a super-premium wine, thereby leaving their main wine bereft of its very best componen
A fine bouquet of white flowers and ripe pear leads to a generous and creamy palate. The finish is long and elegant, with a well balanced acidity to support the stone fruit and floral character. 85% Chardonnay, 15% Viognier.
Soft melon skin aromas with distinctly lively, fresh citrus/grapefruit flavours. Immediate appeal and great potential
Winner of the 'Best Chard in the world'. Despite that rather scarily lofty accolade, it is good!

Part of the famous Mont-Redon estate, Jean Abeille's vineyard occupies a total of 100 hectares of land with classic Châteauneuf characteristics: mature bush vines sit on a plateau with great sun exposure, and a topsoil covered with heat-retaining pebbles. Superbly balanced between youthful fruit and warm, oaky complexity. Nose and palate are replete with notes of cinnamon and clove amid the the dense bramble fruit. Enjoyable immediately, but will improve with 5 years' cellaring. Drink with red meats or game.
