I was strongly reminded of the force of character that this region attracts when I met France Crispeel and tasted her vibrant Carignan. A love of good wine and a bizarre urge to ‘have a go’ drove her to leave her native Belgium and move south to the Agly valley in the Roussillon region. Her most cherished and precious assets are her ancient vines of Carignan of which a fair proportion are 100-years-old. Organically farmed, they produce a wine of intense character, a bit like France herself!
Soft melon skin aromas with distinctly lively, fresh citrus/grapefruit flavours. Immediate appeal and great potential
Winner of the 'Best Chard in the world'. Despite that rather scarily lofty accolade, it is good!
A fine bouquet of white flowers and ripe pear leads to a generous and creamy palate. The finish is long and elegant, with a well balanced acidity to support the stone fruit and floral character. 85% Chardonnay, 15% Viognier.
Jubilee breakfasts served soldier style. Sound the reveille for proper toast soldiers to dip in your guardsman egg.
The 2008 is deep red in colour with garnet tints. The nose is full of mulberry and liquorice notes. Merlot has given a velvet textured palate, with intense cassis and fine grained tannins from the Syrah, as well as a lingering, complex vanilla and spice finish from 18 months ageing in French oak. 50% Syrah/Shiraz, 50% Merlot.
Henri and Daniel Brunier of historic Châteauneuf property Vieux-Télégraphe (a classic cobblestone-strewn estate on the heat-steeped Hill of Crau) bought a farm from a pair of old men (who continued to live on there as part of the arangement) high in the hills behind Gigondas. Although much work on reviving the vineyards was needed they knew what they were doing for this is seriously good wine. The 2004 cheerily expresses the warm generosity of well-made Grenache.

Part of the famous Mont-Redon estate, Jean Abeille's vineyard occupies a total of 100 hectares of land with classic Châteauneuf characteristics: mature bush vines sit on a plateau with great sun exposure, and a topsoil covered with heat-retaining pebbles. Superbly balanced between youthful fruit and warm, oaky complexity. Nose and palate are replete with notes of cinnamon and clove amid the the dense bramble fruit. Enjoyable immediately, but will improve with 5 years' cellaring. Drink with red meats or game.

Owned by Vignobles Jean François Carrille, this is by anyone’s standards, an ancient estate, able to trace its roots back to 732. The blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc set this apart at tasting, showing plenty of red fruit and subtlety – very St Emilion. The seven hectares of vines are spread over five very diverse parcels of land, each with its own specific character, adding to the wines complexity. The use of 40% new oak and 60% of one vintage old barrels, add cedar tones, but this in no way dominates, allowing the purity of red fruit from forty year old vines, to shine through. 2018 – 2022.

When we tasted at this most highly-regarded Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate in Bédarrides this summer, we realised just how dynamic the brothers Brunier are. No sitting back and expecting their 'other' wines to bask in VT's reflected glory. Daniel and Frédéric Brunier continue to hone and polish even their most junior Vin de Pays, and have now decided to split the production of their Gigondas Les Pallières into two different cuvées - finding the terrain so completely different within this vineyard, that it supported two entirely different styles of wine. We chose Les Pallières over the Terrasse du Diable for its greater definition and freshness. Unlike many Châteauneuf estates, the brothers choose to declassify their young vine production as a separate entity in order to maximise the quality of their main wine. Contrarily, there are some big-name estates who cream-off and sell their top cuvées as a super-premium wine, thereby leaving their main wine bereft of its very best componen

The whimsical scent called Eau des Merveilles (French for Water of Wonders) has been described as surprising refreshing and magical. Eau des Merveilles has notes that include elemi bitter orange Italian lemon Indonesian pepper and pink pepper. There's also what the house calls an "ambergris accord " plus woody notes including oak cedar vetiver balsam of Peru and tears of Siam. Unlike most fragrances which traditionally only reveal woody and ambery notes at their base Eau des Merveilles' are noticeable throughout. And it has almost no floral notes - a rarity in a women's scent. Serge Mansau designed Eau des Merveilles' orange bottle to invite play like a toy. It is rounded save for three flat planes - two on its bottom and one on its back so the flacon can be set down slanting right or left or laid flat and used as a magnifying glass. Eau des Merveilles' outer box created at Hermes is like a theater showcasing the scent. It also is meant to resemble a secret drawer.
