The region of Bierzo is situated in northwest Spain just inland from Galicia. History shows that winemaking in the area dates back as far as visiting Greeks and Phoenecians. La Mano refers to the work done by the harvesters who collect the Mencia grapes which are then destemmed and crushed before being put into large stainless steel tanks where the pulp is macerated for 48 hours in order to extract maximum aromas and colour. After fermentation the wine goes to mature in barrels of American oak for three months before bottling.
The 2007 Estate Cuvee (44% Syrah, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 19% Petit Verdot) is much bigger and denser than its 2008 counterpart, despite the fact that it is only 15.4% alcohol, compared to the 2008's 15.9%. Fullbodied with abundant notes of creme de cassis, blackberries, smoke, graphite, and charcoal, this dense, layered, beautifully textured effort will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 10-15+ years. 95 points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.
The Adnams Selection White Burgundy £8.99 vs Domaine de la Bongran, Macon-Villages, Burgundy £16.99 Both are made from Chardonnay and are from Macon. The Bongran is made from grapes that are left on the vine for longer than normal, and takes many months to complete fermentation in the cellar. They are very different in style. Quinta do Crasto Tinto 2008 £8.50 vs Quinta do Crasto Reserva 2007 £17.99 The Tinto has all the intensity of a Port – rich, spicy, black fruit flavours, hints of muscovado sugar – without the weight and substantial alcohol. The Reserva uses fruit from 70-year-old vines and is aged in French and American oak barrels. You’ll find it’s more muscular, weighty and intense. Forrest Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough £9.50 vs Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough £18.99 Both are classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. Cloudy Bay is the famous brand which effectively launched New Zealand into the limelight for its outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.
Made in Sherry country in southern Spain by the old established Sherry firm of Barbadillo. Modern european red grape varieties ripen fully and are carefully made into this juicy , lively red.
This wine comes from an 18th century estate which lay dormant for many years before being bought and revived by Bodegas Martín Códax in 2003. 'Pizarra' is the Spanish for slate, and here refers to the slate that characterises the rocky, mineral-rich soils of Bierzo.
Prima Mano has intense jammy plum and raspberry flavours, a black cherry scented nose, and a long, persistent sweet fruit finish with excellent purity. Modern in style, it nevertheless retains a very Italian identity, with a characteristic bitter twist on the finish. 100% Primitivo.
This vintage Spanish red wine is shipped in a deluxe silk lined wooden presentation box with four wine accessories (corkscrew wine pourer drip stopper & wine stopper) [worth £14.99] at no extra cost.

Valdepeñas is situated in the south of the Castilla-La Mancha region, south-east of Madrid. Valdepeñas, meaning 'Valley of the Stones', is one of Spain's oldest wine-producing regions. The region is centred around the city named after it, Valdepeñas, and it is irrigated by the Río Jabalón, a tributary of the Río Guadiana. Its wines, which have a long tradition, are produced from the Tempranillo (known locally as Cencibel). This wine is made by Bodegas Navarro López, founded in 1904 by Doroteo Navarro, who produce a wide selection of wines ranging from their top-quality Gran Reservas to their Vino de la Tierra wines.
Deep coloured with a concentrated chocolate and dark plum perfume and a touch of liquorice that gives way to a full-bodied and powerful palate. Dark red fruit dominates the palate with the characteristic tannin of Negroamaro which melts into a long, chocolately finish. 100% Negroamaro di Puglia.
Located in the 'Jerez Superior' the long established firm of Antonio Barbadillo farm just over 500 hectares of vines. They combine state of the art winemaking facilities with ancient barrel halls that store 35 million litres of maturing sherries. They are the largest producer of Manzanilla in Andalucia but their range covers all styles. They are one of the few producers in this region who have mastered the making of fresh dry whites using the local Palomino grape. This grape is perfect for Sherry as it has a tendency to oxidise, keeping it fresh is a great achievement and Barbadillo do it well. Great value for money, a perfect summer aperitif.
One of 9 children of the owner of Rioja house Bodegas Palacios Remondo, Alvaro Palacio has broken away from Rioja to pursue an independent winemaking philosophy. His holdings in Bierzo total only 30ha, spread across some 200 tiny, steeply-sloped vineyard sites. A broad spectrum of aromas gradually emanate from the glass, with blackcurrant and cherry being joined by savoury clove and liquorice notes. Smooth yet muscular tannins and a long, drying finish. An interesting alternative middleweight red, which will go well with full-flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie and hard cheeses or game.

Domaine de la Bongran is one of Adnams most favoured estates. Why? Because year after year the Thevenet family produce stunning wines - totally unique in style and incredibly generous in flavour. Each wine takes months, if not years, to fully ferment. The grapes are late-picked, and the winery philosophy is totally unhurried. The wine is ready when it wants to be - not when the winmakers dictate. Truley fantastic stuff.

The fruit for this comes from three small parcels of vines, the oldest being En La Barre which was planted between 1953 and '56, and is supplemented by wine from the young vines of Clos de la Barre, Genevrières, Goutte d’Or and Charmes.
'Cruz de Piedra' ('stone crosses' marking the Pilgrims' Road to St. Juan de Compostela). The vineyards high in the Calatayud mountains, southeast of Rioja they enjoy heat well into autumn, delivering grapes with super ripe flavours. Yields are low but so are overheads at the modern Virgen de Sierra co-op winery in Villaroya, making this dry white a bargain.
Single vineyard wine; with a judicious use of oak and perfectly integrated ripe, peachy fruit. 2008 produced 30% less in quantity, but the result of this is greater concentraion of aromatics, underscored by fine acidity. From organically grown vineyards, Dominique Lafon is now producing some of the very best wines in these southern vineyards. Exciting and delicious wine - drink from 2010-2014.
A blend of five different parcels located in La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie. A lively and detailed nose leads through to pure flavours of red and black currants with a subtle touch of minerality. Delicate, silky tannins create a sleek texture that culminates in an elegant and lengthy finish. A villages of superior quality to its rank.
Deeply coloured and exuberant on the nose, with perfumes of ripe, red fruit, especially raspberries and a spicy, smoky edge from the oak ageing. On the palate it is youthful and full-bodied, with great balance between ripe, rounded fruit characters including blackberry and blueberry, sweet, toasty oak and ripe, full tannins. 100% Primitivo.
